This is the email outlining the project brief that I am going to undertake:
Win £200 and see your designs adorn the hoardings of the new residential development site at Newton Park
From June this summer the hockey pitch car park at Newton Park will begin its transformation into new student residential accommodation. The work will take just over a year and the new accommodation will be ready for students in September 2014. While the building works take place, the site will be surrounded by hoardings, in the same way as the academic building site in the middle of the campus.
The hoarding boards are a blank canvas available for adornment so, we are inviting students to submit designs and be in with a chance to win £200.
The boards will be visible to all visitors to campus. This is a great opportunity to showcase your work on a large scale in a semi-permanent exhibition.
The brief
The competition is open to all students and designs can be in any printable format, for example drawings, paintings, graphic design, photography.
Theme: Bath Spa 2015. This can be interpreted in various ways and can be a reflection on university life or a prediction of the future.
Size: Each design must be scalable to fit 200cm (height) by 244cm (width). A minimum of five and a maximum of ten different designs should be submitted per person.
Deadline: Designs must be submitted by 5:00pm on Friday 31 May 2013
Please remember to include your full name, course and year of study in your submission and email it to npdevelopment@bathspa.ac.uk
Selection: The designs will be judged by a panel of staff and students and the winners notified by the end of June. The boards will be printed and installed during the summer months in time for the start of the new academic year in September.
As you can see, the project requires me to highlight Bath to students in an interesting visual way. This is why I think it would be perfect for me to contextualise the work I have done so far and apply it to this project and develop my ideas towards an outcome for this brief.
The brief is explained very thinly. It has little conent. The theme is described as Bath Spa 2015, which can be interpretted in any way. I dont think that I want to persue the style of photography and work that I have developed so far. I think that I need to conduct more research before I develop my ideas any further.
I like the scale of the hoardings, 244 cm by 200 cm. The only issue I have with this is that they are almost square in shape. I will need to come up with a solution to design that works in this format.
I have just had a masterclass in photography with lomokev. Therefore, this is where my next source of secondary research for this project. I need to come up with content that I am happy with before developing my idea.
