I have come up with an idea of developing an Ipad app for new students of Bath, as a guide to Bath from the view point of a student. This will include many things, where to shop in Bath, public transport in Bath, where to park for students with cars, where to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, and nightclubs in Bath. This could be done in many ways- I could break down the information so that it is in sections that I have just listed, but then I have the complication of how to break down the information into days and times. I could also break down the information into days, sliding from left to write in pages to show the days of the week and sliding downwards to show times of the day. This could be a rather nice idea.
There are lots of really nice places to eat in Bath and there is many continental and oriental restaurants. When attempting this brief, I need to consider consistently that the Ipad app needs to be student friendly. It needs to be fun, interesting and engaging.
It is a good project for me because it will develop my technical skills in Ipad production- I have never made one before so I need to do a lot of research into how to develop an app. I will use mag plus to do this.
Bath is such a beautiful place to live and although I need to approach the app with a fun student point of view I also need to capture the essence of Bath, what Bath is all about. This for me is the friendly atmosphere and the natural beauty of the city. Bath has some great nightclubs and pubs, but if you are a student, you would not come to Bath purely for this. It is completely different to a busy city university such as Bristol which Bath is neighbour to. Therefore, if I present information for students for Bath in the same way as I would Bristol I think that I would be doing the university lifestyle an injustice and providing false information.
I think that one of the most important aspects of this ipad app will be the nightlife, therefore this is where my primary research will start. I am going to explore with my d90, my 18-115mm, 35mm prime and 70mm prime in Bath at night, and see where this takes me. the two primes will allow me to experiment with extremely shallow depths of fields which should allow for some really interesting shots.
I am quite adept with photography. I was a club photographer in Bath which helped me develop my night photography skills and how to successfully use long exposure and flash. Also, this has helped me with knowledge of the best places to go out in Bath. I also have contacts for all of the clubs in Bath so if I come up with an interesting way to shoot, for instance from an interesting angle or focusing on a particular part of a composition etc then I can visit nightclubs and take photos.
With regards to secondary research, I am going to initially explore flickr and blogging sites as I believe that this is the best place to see true creativity and original work. Also, I will visit the library and see if I can find any references that will inspire me. Finally, I need to research existing Ipad apps for inspiration for an interesting layout and way of functioning.
